NANA4D, Palangka Raya – Lake Toba is located on Sumatra Island, precisely in Simalungun, North Sumatra. The lake was formed naturally due to the powerful eruption of Mount Toba more than 74,000 years ago.
“Not only is it the largest natural lake in Southeast Asia, Lake Toba is also classified as the largest volcanic lake in the world, which was formed from volcanic activity,” said Head of International Service, Prof. Rahmawaty from the University of North Sumatra or USU in his official statement on Saturday, 23 December 2023.
The position of Lake Toba which is located 900 meters above sea level makes the atmosphere around the lake cooler.
Apart from that, its beauty can also be seen from the role of Lake Toba which is also home to two ethnic groups, namely the Tomok and Simanindo.
“The location of the largest lake in Indonesia is in seven districts that surround the Lake Toba tourist area, namely Tobasa district, Samosir district, Semalungun district, Dairi district, North Tapanuli district, Karo district and Humbang Hasundutan district,” he explained.
Lake Toba, he said, is one of Indonesia’s stunning natural wonders, combining extraordinary natural beauty with a rich cultural heritage. With sustainable tourism development.
Together with the Chair of International Service, Prof. Rahmawaty, Prof. Abdul Rauf, also from USU, Prof. Mohd Hasmadi Ismail from Universiti Putra Malaysia and Assoc Prof. Seca Gendaseca from Universiti Technology MARA made a tourist visit to Lake Toba, located on Sumatra Island, to be precise in Simalungun, North Sumatra. This activity also involved USU Bachelor of Agriculture and PSL PhD student Fitra Syawal Harahap.
According to Fitra Syawal Harahap, Lake Toba has great potential as an attractive tourist destination for local and international tourists.
“Through a visit to Lake Toba, we can experience the wonders of nature while learning and appreciating unique culture and traditions,” said Fitra.
According to him, the area around Lake Toba is home to the Batak tribe, one of Indonesia’s indigenous tribes who are rich in their culture and traditions.
“When visiting Lake Toba, tourists can feel the warmth and friendliness of the local residents, as well as witness stunning traditional music and Batak dance performances,” he said.
Apart from enjoying the natural beauty of Lake Toba, there are many interesting tourist activities to enjoy around this lake. Tourists can explore the lake by renting a traditional Batak boat called a Solu or Sampan.
